What's new in v1.0.0-beta-5
# Eclipse Launcher Beta 5 This beta fixes update recovery and adds smaller incremental app updates, an About page and a proper new-installation flow for modpacks. ## Updates - The updater asks every running launcher from this installation to close before the app swap, and checks again after downloading. A leftover background process is ended only after its windows have closed, a grace period has elapsed and the open process handle is verified against this installation again. A still-visible window blocks the update. Other installations and Minecraft processes are not closed. - Interrupted swaps retain the previous installation record. A failed rename can no longer mark the old executable as the new version. - The actual launcher executable version is verified before committing and before reporting an installation as current. - Unchanged Java runtimes are preserved, including mixed updates where only one runtime changes. The new updater fetches a runtime only when its published component changed or its required files are missing. - Release builds now generate a GitHub-hosted Windows binary delta against the previous beta. Every reconstructed file is verified before the installation swap; changed bases or rejected patches fall back to the full verified app archive. ## About Eclipse - Settings now shows the running launcher version, release channel, platform, copyable build information and an update check. - Privacy, Terms and the installation folder are accessible from the same section. A mismatched installation record is shown explicitly. - New Minecraft cabin artwork uses the launcher's existing brand, controls and theme materials. Seven logo taps bring out Atro. ## Modpacks - Modpack browsing no longer asks for a target instance or filters releases to the currently selected installation. - Create installation lets you name a separate installation and choose its exact pack release, Minecraft version and loader filter. - Both catalogue cards and project pages use this flow. The Create action remains visible in smaller windows. ## Before testing Beta 4 and older updaters need one ordinary app update to receive the incremental-update engine. They will use the full app archive for this transition; unchanged Java archives are no longer mandatory for that old update path. Fresh Setup downloads still include bundled Java. Later updates can use deltas when the installed base matches the published patch. Older or modified bases use the full app fallback. If an older updater left an old launcher running or an incorrect installation record, close the launcher and run the new Setup against the same installation folder. The new engine compares the actual executable version rather than trusting that record. Offline native reconstruction tests cover unchanged, patched, new and removed files; damaged bases, wrong hashes, wrong releases and path traversal are rejected. Recovery tests cover interrupted swaps and runtime reuse. UI verification used real Modrinth releases with an explicit development callback: Minecraft 1.21.11 and pack 12.2.2 reached creation unchanged, without writing an installation. Full tester modpack gameplay and live Windows upgrade testing remain required.

Windows SmartScreen Notice

Because Eclipse is a new launcher, Windows may show a "Windows protected your PC" warning. This is normal for new software that hasn't yet built up download reputation. Click More info → Run anyway to continue.

Antivirus False Positives

A single antivirus engine currently flags the installer — an AI/heuristic detection, marked by a suffix like !ml or ml.score, not a real virus signature. This happens because Eclipse is unsigned and does things a launcher legitimately needs to: it launches Java, writes to your AppData folder, and updates itself. Zero signature-based engines detect anything, and code-signing (which clears the heuristic flag) is something we're actively working towards as the project grows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Eclipse Launcher free?

Yes — completely free, with no ads, no paid tiers, and no feature held back behind a purchase. Mods, modpacks, skins, capes, and server hosting are all included. Donations are welcome and go towards running costs like the skin server and code signing, but nothing in the launcher depends on them.

Do I need to install Java myself?

No. Eclipse reads the Java version each Minecraft release requires and downloads a matching Adoptium runtime on demand — Java 8 for 1.16 and older, Java 17 for 1.17 through 1.20.4, Java 21 for 1.20.5 through 1.21.x, and Java 25 for 26.1 and newer. Runtimes are kept alongside the launcher, so a system Java install is never needed and never interfered with.

Can I play without a Minecraft account?

Yes. Offline accounts let you pick a username and play straight away — useful for singleplayer, LAN, and servers running in offline mode. Servers that verify accounts with Mojang still need a genuine Microsoft login, which Eclipse also supports. Note that offline accounts always use the default Minecraft skin.

How do custom skins and capes work?

Skins and capes are applied by an Eclipse account through the Customize page on this site, and appear in-game without touching your Minecraft profile. Microsoft accounts keep using their normal Mojang skin, and offline accounts show the default skin — so nobody can wear a skin belonging to a username they do not own.

How do I install mods and modpacks?

Open the launcher's modpack browser and install from CurseForge or Modrinth in one click. Eclipse sets up the right mod loader for you — Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt — and creates an isolated instance, so a modded setup can never break your vanilla worlds.

Do my friends need Eclipse to join a server I host?

No. Eclipse creates the server, opens a tunnel, and hands you an address to share — no port forwarding and no router configuration. Anyone on the same Minecraft version can join from any launcher, and only the person hosting needs Eclipse.

Why does Windows warn me when I run the installer?

Because the installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen shows its "Windows protected your PC" prompt for software it has not seen often. Choose More info, then Run anyway. The prompt fades as more people download each release, and a signing certificate is on the roadmap.

My antivirus flagged the download — is it safe?

It is a false positive from heuristic scanning, not a signature match. An unsigned launcher does several things malware also does: starts a Java process, writes to AppData, and updates itself. That behavioural pattern is what triggers AI-based detections, labelled with suffixes like !ml or ml.score. On the current build 58 of 59 engines report it completely clean, the one flag is a machine-learning guess, and no signature-based engine detects anything. The Security page links the full VirusTotal report.
